Website Accessibility Audit

New Jersey Coalition Against Human Trafficking is a nonprofit who strives to unite New Jersey’s communities to end human trafficking.

The Goal

Create a report that list sections of the website that do not meet accessibility guidelines so they can be amended to become an AAA accessible website.

My Role

UX researcher

Project Duration

4 weeks

Background

This project was in collaboration with New Jersey Coalition Against Human Trafficking (NJCAHT). The project objective was to review a new website created by the NJCAHT to offer free lesson plans to Health and PE teachers to schools in
New Jersey.

Challenges

  1. Making a list of recommendations targeted towards a Google site builder.

    • Making a site with a Google site builder does not require an individual to know how to code or what to look for in code.

Responsibilities

  • Review each webpage

  • Analyze sections that are out of ADA and WAG 2.0 compliance

  • Create a list of recommendations

  • Write a report on the website audit

Research

  1. Understand in detail what makes a website ADA/WCAG 2.0 accessible.

  2. Review NJCAHT’s website and note all noncompliant ADA/WCAG 2.0 parts on their website.

  3. Research resources on how to make specific aspects of the website compliant for NJCAHT to access in the recommendation section.

My research process was broken down into 3 steps:

Report

After all of the notes and research was compiled, the next steps were to:

  1. Organize and develop a report that addresses all ADA/WCAG 2.0 needs and provide recommendations on how to fix them.

  2. Deliver the report to the executive director and president of NJCAHT.

Outcome

Once NJCAHT received the report, they had all of the necessary tools to create an AAA accessible website and become a resource for teachers in New Jersey by providing free and informative lesson plans.

Lessons Learned

It was my first time dealing with Google’s website builder and some of the resources that I found were for HTML and CSS. However, that would not be useful if there is no one on the team to implement the code into the website. If I had to do it all over again, I would find additional resources specifically for Google’s website builder.
