Ever wonder how to ride the bus in Japan?

While is true that some buses in Japan will let you pay with an IC card, not all buses have implemented that system. Shingu Tourism Association has broken down the process into 3 comprehensive steps (with illustrations included!).

Step 1: Take a numbered ticket from the ticket machine.

When you enter the bus, there will be a box where you can get a ticket number. It’s important you take one before you find a seat.

Step 2: Push the button when you hear your stop.

A button looking like the illustration on the left will be scattered around the bus. When you hear your stop, just press this button and the driver will stop at the upcoming bus stop.

Step 3: Look at your ticket number and pay the fare listed on the board and exit the bus!

At the front of the bus you will see a list of numbers and the corresponding bus fares. Match your ticket number to the number on the board and pay at the front of the bus. If you don’t have exact change, don’t worry! The machine can break 1000 yen bills into coins.
